FAQ
Questions
- What is AI citation tracking?
- Recording the pages an AI answer gives as its sources, prompt by prompt: what the engine read before it named someone. Pages that name a competitor and not you are the ones worth getting onto.
- Which engines show their sources?
- The ones that search the web before they answer: ChatGPT and Google AI Mode on every report, and Gemini, Perplexity and Grok and Claude Search when you add them. Claude without search answers from what it knows and cites nothing.
- Why only prompts that do not name me?
- An answer to a prompt with your name in it mostly cites your own pages. The pages that decide whether you are recommended are the ones cited when nobody named you.
- How is this different from a backlink tool?
- A backlink tool counts the links to your site from anywhere. Sources counts the pages AI answers cite for your buyers' prompts, and whether each names you — with a link or without one.
- Can I see the pages that name my competitors?
- Yes. Offsite mentions marks each third-party page by whether it names you, a competitor, or nobody; the ones naming a rival and not you are where Outreach starts.
- Do you read every cited page?
- Every third-party one its robots.txt lets in, as PassciteBot, asking again at every redirect. A page that turns it away is listed with the reason. Reddit does, so its threads are counted and listed, not read for names.
- How often are the pages read?
- Once, then again after 30 days, or sooner when your list of competitors changes.
- Does it cost credits?
- No. Sources reads the answers your reports already paid for: run a report and it fills in.
