When a prospect asks an assistant for an agency, you are not on the list
We ran this on Single Grain
Tested 30 buyer questions across ChatGPT (API), Perplexity, Gemini. 21 of them never name Single Grain — those are the ones a buyer who has not heard of them would ask.
Run on against ChatGPT (API) openai/gpt-5.4-mini, Perplexity perplexity/sonar-pro, Gemini google/gemini-3-flash. Engines answer differently over time — this is what they said that day.

What the site never says
For each question, what the model needed to find on the site and did not — in its own words.
“most recommended digital marketing agency”
The site would need to explicitly say it is one of the most recommended digital marketing agencies or provide a comparable recommendation claim.
“who is the best digital marketing agency for ecommerce”
The site would need to say directly that Single Grain is the best digital marketing agency for ecommerce, not just list ecommerce SEO as an expertise area.
“best digital marketing agency for SEO”
The site would need to directly claim it is the best digital marketing agency for SEO.
“best digital marketing agency for B2B”
The site would need to directly state that Single Grain is the best digital marketing agency for B2B.
What the report told them to do
Generated from the questions they lost, not from a checklist. Each one names the questions it is meant to win back.

Everyone in this category writes the same page
Agency sites are made of claims that cannot be checked: award-winning, results-driven, data-led. Every competitor makes the identical claim, which means none of them distinguishes anybody, which means an assistant asked to recommend an agency falls back on the sources that do distinguish — Clutch, agency directories, roundups. The escape is specificity that can be verified: a named vertical, a stated price, a real number, a method described in enough detail that it could be argued with.
What to do about it
This is the shape of every report we produce, split two ways: the changes we will make for you on WordPress once the plugin ships (as drafts, behind approval), and the ones only you can do — claiming a listing, fixing a profile, answering the questions a page has been avoiding. We mark which is which rather than pretending the second column does not exist.
- 01
Name the vertical and the size of client you serve
'Marketing agency' is not a category anything can recommend into. 'SEO for dental practices with two to five locations' is.
- 02
Publish what an engagement costs
A range and what changes it. Almost no agency does this, which is exactly why the one that does gets quoted.
- 03
Keep the directory profiles that outrank you current
Clutch and the rest are being cited instead of your site. They are also the profiles your prospects read.
