Best Semrush and Ahrefs alternatives for AI search
If you already pay for Ahrefs on a Lite plan or above, custom prompt tracking is included at no extra cost and you should use that before paying anybody else — the separate AI Visibility Index starts at $199 a month and is for a different job. Semrush includes AI visibility reports and custom prompts from its $117.33 SEO plan, but its dedicated AI tier tracks 50 prompts a day on one domain for $165.17, which is expensive across a client roster. The case for a separate tool is narrow and specific: you need it to publish the fix rather than measure the gap, which is Foliora or Rank Prompt; or you need per-client-site pricing and a per-question answer across a roster, which is where Passcite fits — at roughly $13 a site against Semrush tracking one domain for $165.17, and with a fraction of the incumbents' sampling.
How we ranked these
These 5 criteria were fixed before the tools were scored, and the scoring is checked against them — a tool cannot be given a mark on a criterion that is not on this list, and cannot skip one. That is the whole difference between this page and the others answering the same question.
- 01
Already in what you pay for
The first question, and almost nobody selling in this category will ask it for you. Both incumbents shipped AI visibility features into existing plans, so a large share of the people shopping for a GEO tool already own one.
- 02
Cost per client domain
The incumbents are priced for a brand watching itself. An agency watching twenty clients is a different shape of customer, and this is the row where that shows up.
- 03
Engines and volume
The incumbents have enormous sampling — hundreds of millions of prompts a month. Nothing in the small-tool cluster comes close, and pretending otherwise on a comparison page would be the easiest lie to check.
- 04
Measures, or changes the site
The clearest dividing line in this market. The incumbents measure and do not publish. If you need the fix written and published, no amount of tracking depth substitutes.
- 05
Mentions, or named losses
Share of voice across a prompt set and a per-question list of who beat you are different products. The first is for a brand manager reporting a trend; the second is for someone deciding what to write on Monday.
The ranking
- 1
Ahrefs Brand Radar
Custom prompts free on any paid Ahrefs plan; AI Visibility Index from $199 / month
AI visibility tracking built into Ahrefs — custom prompts, AI responses, cited pages, plus YouTube and Reddit visibility.
- Already in what you pay forYes
Custom prompt tracking is "free in every Ahrefs paid plan" from Lite upward. If you pay for Ahrefs, you already have this, and it is the single most useful fact on this page.
- Cost per client domainPartly
Custom prompts come with the plan you already have. The AI Visibility Index at $199 a month is a separate purchase, and their own page says it is best once a brand already appears in AI search.
- Engines and volumeYes
457 million monthly prompts across AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Copilot and AI Mode. No small tool has sampling within orders of magnitude of this.
- Measures, or changes the siteNo
It tracks and reports. Nothing is written to your site, and it is not sold as though it were.
- Mentions, or named lossesPartly
AI responses and cited pages are there, which is more than most trackers give. It is still organised around brand visibility rather than per-question wins and losses.
Where Ahrefs Brand Radar wins- Free custom prompt tracking on a subscription most agencies already hold — nothing else on this page can say that.
- Sampling at a scale nobody in the small-tool cluster can approach.
- YouTube and Reddit visibility alongside AI answers, which is where a lot of cited material actually lives.
- The backlink and keyword datasets underneath, which remain a genuine moat.
- 2
Semrush AI Visibility
$117.33 / month billed annually for SEO; $165.17 for the Starter AI tier
AI visibility built into the Semrush platform — AI search performance, sentiment, visibility reports for any domain, custom prompts.
- Already in what you pay forYes
The $117.33 SEO plan already lists "track performance in AI search", "monitor AI sentiment", "AI visibility reports for any domain" and "monitor custom prompts". Check your plan before buying anything.
- Cost per client domainPartly
The Starter AI tier at $165.17 tracks 50 prompts daily on one domain. 15 domains at $248.17 is about $16.50 a domain — comparable to us — but the 50 prompts a day are shared across them.
- Engines and volumeYes
ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and the rest, with 300 AI visibility reports a day at the Starter tier. Sampling and breadth are not the constraint here.
- Measures, or changes the siteNo
An AI-ready site audit tells you what is wrong. Nothing publishes the fix.
- Mentions, or named lossesPartly
Visibility reports for any domain are genuinely useful for prospecting. The unit is still brand performance rather than the buyer question you lost.
Where Semrush AI Visibility wins- AI visibility reports for any domain, which makes prospecting a client trivial if you already subscribe.
- MCP access from the Starter tier, so it can be driven from your own assistant.
- Fifteen sites to monitor at $248.17 and forty at $455.67 — real multi-site support, if you can afford that shelf.
- The most complete SEO platform on this page by a long way, built over fifteen years.
- 3
Rank Prompt
$39.17 to $239.17 / month billed annually, by credits
A dedicated answer-engine tracker with content generation, white-label reports and client portals on the upper tiers.
- Already in what you pay forNo
A separate subscription in every case.
- Cost per client domainPartly
500 brands on the $119.17 Agency tier, which is a far better shape for a roster than either incumbent. The credits underneath are what actually bind.
- Engines and volumeYes
Six engines including Grok and Claude — more named assistants than either incumbent tracks, at a fraction of the sampling volume.
- Measures, or changes the siteYes
Publishes to WordPress and GitHub pull requests, and generates articles. Approvals only from $239.17.
- Mentions, or named lossesPartly
Share of answer and citation counts, plus an action plan built from the report.
Where Rank Prompt wins- White-label reports and a per-brand client portal at $119.17, which neither incumbent offers at any price.
- Six named engines, including two the incumbents do not track separately.
- It publishes, which neither incumbent does.
- A free forever tier so the comparison can be made before paying.
- 4
Foliora
$49.99 or $149.99 / site / month
A per-site loop that finds the gap, drafts the change, waits for approval, publishes it and verifies the result.
- Already in what you pay forNo
A separate subscription, priced per site.
- Cost per client domainNo
$49.99 to $149.99 per site with no portfolio price. Fifteen client sites is $750 to $2,250 a month.
- Engines and volumePartly
ChatGPT and Gemini only, with no Perplexity — narrower than either incumbent and narrower than most of the small tools.
- Measures, or changes the siteYes
The strongest answer on this row anywhere: drafts, approval, publishing to four targets plus MCP, then live verification with the evidence kept.
- Mentions, or named lossesYes
Buyer-question checks with competitor and citation-source review, and the answer transcripts attached.
Where Foliora wins- It closes the loop the incumbents do not even attempt — publish, then verify the answer changed.
- Approval included on the cheapest plan.
- Evidence receipts, dated and traceable, for every claim it makes.
- Publishes to Shopify, which neither incumbent nor Rank Prompt does.
- 5
Passcite
This is us$0 to $499 / month, per client site
30 buyer questions across three engines per client site, with the competitor that won each question named and the page of theirs that was cited.
- Already in what you pay forNo
A separate subscription — though the free report and the tools cost nothing, so the comparison can be made without one.
- Cost per client domainYes
Fifteen client sites for $199, fifty for $499, flat. About $13 a site, against Semrush's Starter tier tracking one domain for $165.17.
- Engines and volumePartly
Three — ChatGPT (API), Perplexity, Gemini. Fewer than Ahrefs' six and at a tiny fraction of their sampling volume.
- Measures, or changes the siteNo
Not yet. We are on the measuring side of the line with the incumbents today, without their data.
- Mentions, or named lossesYes
The one row we clearly win: every question returns the named competitor that won it and the specific page of theirs the engine cited. No score, no share of voice.
Where we lose- Sampling: Ahrefs reads 457 million prompts a month. We ask 30 questions per site. Those are not the same instrument and ours is the small one.
- Already paid for: if you have Ahrefs at Lite or above, prompt tracking is free and we are asking you to add a bill.
- Publishing: Foliora and Rank Prompt both write the fix. We do not, which puts us on the same side of the line as the incumbents without their datasets.
- Breadth: Semrush audits hundreds of technical checks and tracks keywords, locations and devices. We check what affects being quoted and stop.
Where we are strong- Per client site at a flat price — about $13 a site at the Agency plan, where Semrush's AI tier tracks one domain for $165.17.
- Named competitor and cited page per question, rather than a share-of-voice number.
- A free report with three engines and no account, so the comparison against what you already pay for costs nothing to run.
- 11 free tools with no signup, which are useful whether or not you ever buy anything.
What this page leaves out, and why
A ranking that quietly omits a tool is doing the same thing as a ranking that scores itself first. Every tool we considered and did not rank is here with the reason.
Moz, SE Ranking, Sistrix
Other general SEO platforms with AI features arriving. We verified Semrush and Ahrefs on 2026-09-15 and did not verify these, so they are not scored.
Checked 2026-09-15
Profound, Peec
Enterprise trackers sold to brands with a sales process, not something a ten-person agency resells. Not what someone leaving a Semrush subscription is shopping for.
Checked 2026-09-15
overrank, SEOBOT
Content production rather than visibility measurement. Nothing about them substitutes for what Semrush or Ahrefs does.

ChatSEO
We could not reach chatseo.com on the date below, so there was nothing to check. If the site is up when you read this, its free tier is worth a look.
Checked 2026-09-15
Rows were last read on 2026-09-15. Prices in this category move quickly — each tool carries its own date above, so a stale row is visibly stale rather than quietly wrong. If one of these is out of date, tell us and we will re-check it.
